Robert's Experience

Robert has been Member of Parliament for Salisbury since June 1983.

He served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Edward Heath MP, to the Minister of State for Energy (the late Rt Hon Alick Buchanan-Smith MP) and in 1987 he joined Chris Pattern who was Minister for Overseas Development and he remained in that position on Chris Pattern's appointment as Secretary of State for the Environment in January 1989.

In October 1990, Margaret Thatcher invited Mr Key to join her Government as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of the Environment.

Following the General Election in 1992, he moved on to be a Founder Minister at the Department of National Heritage where he held responsibility for the Arts, Heritage, Press, Broadcasting, Film Industry, Sport and Tourism. He developed the concept of the National Lottery and the Millenium Fund and took the legislation through the House of Commons.

In May 1993, the Prime Minister appointed Robert as Minister for Roads and Traffic at the Department of Transport, where his responsibilities included the development of telematics and electronic traffic management systems. He held this position until he left the Government in July 1994.

From November 1994 until March 1995, he was a Member of the House of Commons All-Party Select Committee on Health, and from then until March 1997, he served on the Defence Select Committee. In June 1997, he was appointed as Opposition Frontbench Spokesman on Defence. In September 2001, he was appointed a Frontbench Spokesman for Trade & Industry. From July 2002 to June 2003, he served as Shadow Minister for International Development. From November 2004 to May 2005, he was served as Shadow Minister for Science.

About Robert

Robert was born in Plymouth in 1945, he moved to Salisbury in 1947, and was educated at Salisbury Cathedral School, Sherbourne School Dorset, and Clare College, Cambridge, where he read Economics and gained his MA and a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education.

He married Sue Irvine, a science graduate and former teacher, in 1968. They have a son and two daughters.
